Rock salt (also known as halite or salt rock) is an evaporite and sedimentary rock that was formed naturally in the geological past by precipitation from concentrated seawater and has been preserved in fossil form. Apart from minor admixtures of other evaporite minerals, rock salt consists exclusively of the mineral halite (sodium chloride, NaCl). The word “rock salt” is used in mineralogical literature as a synonym for “halite”. Rock salt is the raw material for an estimated 70 per cent of the table salt produced worldwide.
